The Leaders started off at the Sanatorium Alatau near Almaty, with great views of the mountains.
Moving to Astana for the opening ceremony at the Palace of Independence, this portrait attracted many people’s attention.
On stage at the opening ceremony, children danced wearing clothes with mathematical symbols; then the teams paraded.

At the Leaders’ hotel in Astana, partial scores were projected from a laptop (which was easier to photograph than the resulting projection).
Finally, leaders and teams got to meet again at the equestrian sports complex Kazanat. But the adults were taken to eat in yurts while the teams ate outside. How long the food had been sitting in the rather hot yurts is not clear.
Outside the Palace of Independence for the closing ceremony, everyone could mix for a while, then walk inside in country groups.
Inside, people received their medals on stage.

Avoiding the mistake made by many IMO hosts of keeping leaders and teams separate at the final dinner so as to give alcohol to leaders only, at IMO 2010 we had marked country tables with enough room for everyone.
The Golden Microphone went to Johan Konter of the Netherlands. Note the golden vuvuzela as well.

Australian koalas were everywhere.
And so everyone went home; James gave out the certificates at Heathrow.
